Description

This time I bring you a simple key holder Swiss Army knife-like.

A little of context

My previous one broke, and I decided to make a new one in no time. The previous one was of this type and lasted a good couple of years. Back then, there was a lot of variety for these kinds of models, but for some reason, perhaps because I am using the wrong keywords, not much comes up now. What could have happened? This Swiss Army knife-like system, created by Karl Elsener (VictorInox) does not have an active patent, this system was patented by him in 1891.

Thus, more than 20 years have passed since the creation of the patent, so that cannot be the reason for the disappearance of these functional and compact key holders.

The function

This is a very compact key holder that can be used with blade-type keys (the most conventional ones) in a Swiss Army knife style. Additionally, it has an outer ring that can be used to hang other types of keys or even a tracking tag of your choice. And for sure it will play nicely with my Keychain and Tags. Think of this one like a tag, but with key in it.

The number of blade-type keys should be two or more, ideally in an equal number on each side.

Since not all keys have the same thickness, you can use spacers, which not only allow smooth movement between the keys (acting like a bushing) but also help compensate for differences in thickness between the keys. Therefore, you should print a number of these spacers at least equal to the number of keys minus two. In other words, for eight keys, you will need a minimum of six spacers, but you will likely need more to compensate for the differences in key thickness.

The circle you see is the area where you can place a magnet (optional), which will allow attachment to the "keychain and tags" mentioned in the previous point.

Material

  • 2x neodymium magnets of 10x3mm (one on each side)
  • 3x A2-70 ISO 7380 M3 Bolt (length will vary depending on the number of keys, so I have added a couple of lengths for you to choose on the bill of materials bellow).
  • 3x A2-70 ISO 7380 M3 nuts

Printing

To obtain the carbon fiber texture on the surface, I used the "Bambu 3D Effect Sheet" build plate kit. Remember this special effects can only be applied on PLA…

The printer will pause 2 times to allow you to insert the magnets. Ensure they are inserted with the correct orientation (especially if you plan to use this with the previous keychain) so that the key holder is attracted. If you do not want this function, you can resume the print without inserting the magnet.

Material

Any material you choose, just remember to change it on the slicer.

This examples where made with Bambu Lab PLA Matte
