Window Jars

I love combining different materials with printed models. Sometimes it's purely for the sake of it, but there are plenty of occasions where adding something is just a much better solution to a problem.

I I wanted a jar with a lid that allowed me to see the stuff inside, without said stuff being able to just fall out. And so we have a multi-part lid designed to incorporate a plastic (or glass, if you're fancy) window. The lid is designed with threads on top and underneath, and there's a flat shelf that protrudes slightly in the middle. The window material lies on this shelf, and a retaining ring threads in over the top to hold it tightly in place.

As for my specific material, I think it was a bottle of Pepsi Max. A nice, clear PET bottle, anyway, and it worked very well for my purposes. Use the retaining ring as a guide to cut out a circle, and bear in mind that you'll want to be reasonably similar in size so as to fit on the shelf without being too wide for the surrounding walls.

Print Description

This is an assembly of regular-mode printed parts, and while there's nothing at all tricky in there you'll still want to make sure that things like bolt threads are neat and clean for easy assembly.

Print Dimensions

The jar body occupies 69mm x 69mm on the print bed and is 47mm tall.

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

This one should scale up reasonably well, as the threads are generous and will take up slack as the tolerances scale upwards.

Print Orientation

All the parts print right-way-up.

Further Thoughts

Just because this needed hexagons there's an alternative insert for the lid that has a coarse hexagonal mesh included. It's functionally the same in other respects, and doesn't block the view inside too much :)
