2002 Dodge Quad Cab Hot Wheels Mod

I had an old 2002 Dodge Quad Cab Hot Wheels, and part of it was broken, so the rear axle didn't stay where it was supposed to.  I am personally a Chevy guy anyway, not a Dodge fan, so I decided to make a chassis and long box for it, making it a better farm truck, in my opinion.  The wheels, I cannot remember where I found the files, but I didn't design them. The rims were originally designed by MrLeePerry on Thingiverse, but I heavily modified them, converting them to dually rims, front and rear.  The dually long box was designed by Ducky_McBurger, also on Thingiverse, only modified slightly. The chassis and the bumper, however, I designed from scratch.  

I did several mods to the original model before I could attach all of the 3D printed pieces, I have pictures for almost all of them.  First, I drilled out the rivets on the bottom of the truck to remove the original chassis, then I used a Dremel with the cutoff disc to remove the box.  

Be sure to cut directly behind the cab, on the line between the cab and the box, if you follow this.

  Then the plastic piece that makes up the windows, needs to be cut right behind the back window, and the front axle holder needs to be cut at 5.5mm, as we will not be using that.  

The original bumper on the grill piece is getting replaced, so cut that off.  Be careful that you don't cut down too far.  I suggest using a file, for precision.  The new bumper is to be printed with a raft and supports, and either printed with silver plastic, or painted silver, a silver sharpie is my favorite method.  

I printed the wheels in black plastic, with a raft, and then used my beloved silver sharpie to paint the rims silver.

The box was printed in white; I've found white is the easiest to paint over.  The box needs supports; I didn't use a raft on it though.  

Thats all the pieces you need to make this mod, two front wheels, two rear wheels, one box, one chassis and one bumper.  I did a mockup, I suggest doing that before you paint all the pieces and glue them together.  The bumper friction-fits onto the chassis for the test fit, with the uprights on the bumper at a 90-degree angle to the chassis.  I superglued the whole bumper, for added structural integrity, as well as glueing it to the chassis.  When you glue the chassis to the truck cab, make sure that the bottom of the chassis is in line with the bottom of the cab, not just the bottom of the running boards.

I use straightened paperclips for the axles, using super glue to hold the wheels on.  The wheels don't have super deep holes, so the front axle needs to be 18mm, the rear axle 25mm.

EDIT 

I changed the holes for the axles in the wheels, deepening and enlarging them.  This was after I finished my truck, so I did not play with the axle lengths after that.  I would suggest only expanding the axle length by a millimeter, making the necessary lengths 19mm and 26mm.  I hope that works, please post your makes!

I noticed that my rear wheels weren't turning very well, so I did some trimming with a sharp knife.  I added a picture of what I trimmed, I simply added a chamfer to the inside edge of the rear wheels, and I trimmed the bottom of the wheel wells.

It was suggested to me that I put the make and the model of the vehicle on the bottom of the chassis, the way Hot Wheels does.  Following that advice, I have added a model which says, “Dodge Chassis with Words”.  It is just another Chassis, except this one says “2002 Dodge Quad Cab” on the bottom.

I printed and added the 5th wheel hitch, glueing it in with clear gorilla glue.  I would've used Krazy Glue if I'd had any, but I didn't.  I will also add the links to the other models in the picture.
