Spiral Sovereign Crown

Howdy, wonderful people!

Crown yourself monarch of wherever you happen to be with this convenient vase mode print! Yep, this was another challenge to myself to see if I could strictly abide by the rules of vase mode design but still design something evocative of regal headwear.

Now, you'll probably want to print this one with no bottom layers, which means the first layer will simply be a circle. Of course, you can always add a brim or a raft - do those work with vase mode? They'd at least work just fine with the kind of vase mode that is still layer-by-layer but just has no infill and only a single wall. The lower part of the model begins with a nice, round crowny shape,and gradually bends outwards towards the points, which are made apparent by inward-cutting valleys that run upwards to maintain printability. Those valleys reach their uppermost point behind the crown points, and become horizontal ridges. That ridge is precisely the kind of horizontal we can't have at the bottom of the valleys, since there'd be nothing underneath to support it. At the top junction point there's an abundance of support, so all works nicely.

From there, the model sweeps inwards, reducing volume until it comes, eventually, and after adding a bunch of details, to a single point at the top. If there was a bottom layer this would be a completely enclosed printed volume that you could print without infill. However, you can't wear that :P

Vase mode prints tend to work really nicely with shiny filaments, which is convenient when printing crowns. I used proper, old school spiral vase mode without any starting and stopping to ensure that shininess was maximised.

Print Description

The Spiral Sovereign Crown is a vase mode print (hence the spiral bit in the name) so set your slicer accordingly! You'll want to make sure you turn off bottom layers if you want to actually have a wearable crown! That said, you could probably carefully cut the bottom layers off if you had to :)

Print Dimensions

The Spiral Sovereign Crown is nominally 208mm x 218mm on the print bed and 196mm tall, but can of course be scaled up or down easily thanks to the wonders of designing for vase mode :)

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

As a vase mode print, this one will scale readily up or down!

Print Orientation

As vase mode prints generally do, this one prints right-way-up.

Further Thoughts

The crown idea actually came from modelling another vase mode ring, and trying different approaches to making the inside of the print hollow by making the ring a somewhat convoluted C-shape. That didn't work out well, but it did prompt the idea of dramatic headwear!
