This model has been updated and reuploaded. The parts have been redesigned to make the clock stronger and incorporate removable spokes.
As a fan of George Nelson’s design work, I decided to recreate his Vintage Spindle Clock and turn it into a 3D printing project. Someday I would like to own an original George Nelson clock, but for now I decided to build my own.Â
Parts:
Clock Casing x1, Clock Retaining Ring x1, Clock Back Plate x1, Spoke Connector x12, Spoke Bottom x12, Spoke Middle x12, Spoke Top x12, Hour Hand x1, Minute Hand x1, Second Hand x1. I included 3MF files with the print settings I used.
Hardware:
- 14 M3ns square nuts, 12 M3x40 screws for the spoke connectors, and 2 M3x18 screws for the back plate.
- Hicarer High Torque Quartz Clock Movement. It measures 55.6mm X 55.6mm X 15.8mm with a thread depth of 6.7mm, and it uses 1 AA battery. I reused the second hand fitting and glued it into the 3D printed second hand. The hands for this clock were designed to fit this movement. I will include the product link below so you can purchase the exact model. Hicarer High Torque Quartz Clock Movement
Assembly Instructions:
- Start with the clock casing, 12 M3ns nuts, 12 M3x40 screws, and 12 spoke connectors.
- Install the 12 M3ns nuts into the nut pockets, install the 12 spoke connectors on the clock casing with the seam position facing the rear, and then install the 12 M3x40 screws.
- Install the movement into the clock casing with the included hardware.Â
- Install the retaining ring, then 2 M3ns nuts into the remaining nut pockets, mount the clock back plate with 2 M3x18 screws making sure to align the opening of the clock back with the battery port on the movement.
- Next install the clock hands, hour hand first, then minute hand, and then second hand.
- Gather the spoke parts: bottom, middle, top. Attach the 3 spoke parts together with the included thread. Glue is optional for the 3 spoke parts.
- Attach all 12 spokes to the spoke connectors with the included thread. Do not use glue on the spoke connectors so you can remove the spokes if you need to move the clock.
- Install AA battery, set the time and mount on the wall.
