I wanted an OEM looking install of a Redarc TowPro trailer brake controller in my Chevy Colorado so modeled a dash panel for the remote and an under dash bracket for the control unit. This should work for any model TowPro trailer brake controller, Elite, Liberty or Trail.
If you'd like a blank dash panel to remix for your own idea there is a model here.
Parts Required:
- Redarc TowPro Brake Controller
- Redarc Universal Pig-Tail Harness
- 8 - M4x4x6.3 heat set inserts. I used inserts from CNCKitchen but any with the same dimensions should work. UNLESS YOU HAVE A VERY THIN MARKER, DO NOT INSERT THESE INTO THE PRINTED PART UNTIL AFTER USING THE PART TO MARK THE HOLE LOCATIONS IN YOUR TRUCK.
- 8 - M4x12mm screws. I used button heads just to make sure they didn't interfere with any trim panels.
Printing:
Since this will be inside your vehicle and requires a solid mount to function properly I highly recommend printing in ABS/ASA or another heat stable material.
- The mount require no supports.
- The dash panel printed fine for me letting PrusaSlicer auto generate organic supports.
- I painted fuzzy skin on the face of the dash panel to try and match the rest of the dash.
Installation: (more detailed instructions may be coming soon)
- Remove the driver kick panel, trailer brake controller delete panel, lower dash panel and metal plate under the steering column.
- BEFORE INSTALLING THE HEAT SET INSERTS, Place the mount in the center of the back side of the metal plate. Mark the location of the four through holes of the mount. Use a 3/16" or 5mm drill bit to make the mounting holes.
- Install the heat set inserts into the holes on the mount marked with a triangle.
- Attach the TowPro to the mount and mount to metal plate.
- Install Universal Pig-Tail Harness according to vehicle user manual. Wiring is located behind drivers kick panel.
- Run the Remote Head Cable behind the dash to the location of new panel.
- Connect Remote Head Cable and Universal Pig-Tail Harness to the TowPro and reinstall the metal plat under the steering column.
- Reinstall the lower dash panel.
- Install the Remote Heat Assembly into the printed dash panel. Consult TowPro instructions for assembly order.
- Connect Remote Head Cable to the Assembly and install the dash panel.
