Description

This is a temperature tower that shows (only) the effects of temperature changes with no other features, faster to print and with less material than more complex objects.

You can customize the size of the modules (tower blocks), temperature range, temperature step (how much the temperature changes between blocks) and direction (whether to start by the lowest or the highest temperature), and a recycling symbol to identify the material.

Temperature is upside-down in the back side, so no matter how you make your tower, you'll always be able to see the progression in both directions (increasing and decreasing temperature, independently of how you printed it).

When rendering or previewing the model, the OpenSCAD console panel will output the G-Code required for the temperature changes; just copy the code and paste it into the “After Layer Change G-Code” section of the Printer Settings in your slicer.

It's strongly recommended that all layers, including the first, are of the same height. The customizer will also output (in the OpenSCAD console panel) a suggested filename that includes all the parameters used.

The OpenSCAD customizer file uses the Recymbol library. It's not mandatory to have it installed to run the customizer (the program will just throw some errors), but Recymbol is a breeze to install, and it's not only useful for recycling purposes but also is a great way to identify a material. Maybe you have a RAL Traffic Red color for PLA, PETG and TPU…

As seen in the pictures, the recycling symbol can be printed in another color, without an MMU, with the “print-on-print” technique by Davin Montes. It's more detailed in the Recymbol entry, but in a nutshell you just print the symbol, remove purge line and skirt, change filament, and print the tower just on it ("print-on-print"). There's an offset to the negative spaces in the tower so there's no smearing or dragging.

You might want to check also my other calibration utilities, all parametric and customizable:

  • The extruder multiplier calibration cube
  • The advanced temperature tower, with G-Code generator and tests for bridges and overhangs
  • The parametric overhang test, with support enforcer generator.
  • The E-Cor tower (waveform for the TMC stepper drivers), with G-Code generator.
  • The ironing calibration matrix, with modifier generator.

And, also, the non-parametric-but-modifiable precise Live-Z calibration test.

Once you're done testing and calibrating, sample your filaments with the parametric swatches!

Happy printing!
