Description

I was searching for a gift box that looked like a book. Since I could not find one that I was completely satisfied with, I created my own.

What I was looking for:

  • A convincing book look with a solid back - so no segments to make the cover bend easier and also no hinges.

  • The entire front and back cover should be printed on the build plate so I get the nice surface from a textured print sheet all around.

  • Reasonably durable - so no sharply bent corners that will break after a few times opening and closing it.

  • Stays shut reliably

  • Pages with a subtle riffle effect so they look more like real paper

  • Printable without a multi material system (just a simple, manual color change at a certain height)

Sizes

I provided three sizes:

  • 60mm x 40 mm x 12mm

  • 100mm x 60mm x 15mm

  • 150mm x 90mm x 18mm

Please note that I only tested the 100mm x 60mm x 15mm version (which is the one you see in the provided pictures).

In case you need another size, I also provided the original FreeCAD files that you can use to easily generate (within limits) any size you want. Just open the file in FreeCAD (version 1.1 or newer), find and select the VarSet node in the model tree and enter the desired dimensions.

To export a printable file, select the Part node in the model tree, choose "File -> Export" from the menu and enter the desired file name and type.

Printing

  • I recomend using PETG since it is a bit more flexible than PLA.

  • To get the pages in another color, simply add a manual color change in your slicer.

  • This might not be necessary, but I tried to take the print off the build plate as soon as possible after the print had finished and bent it over, while the plastic is still warm.
