Description
My wife and her sewing group wanted to make Easter egg quilted throw pillows measuring 18" X 13". She asked if I could make her a template for cutting the two halves of the pillow shell. Had I been thinking clearly when she told me the size of the template she needed, I'd have told her I needed a much larger printer for doing that. Unfortunately, my preprogrammed response "Yes Dear" slipped out instead. :(
Typically, I try to keep my designs to where they will fit a 220mm X 220mm build plate, which the most common FDM printers are capable of, but she was in somewhat of a hurry for this one, so I broke the egg into four pieces and printed them on machines with larger build plates. In order to print the four large pieces of the egg without scaling them down, you'll need a printer who's build plate will accommodate a minimum of 229mm X 166mm. The joiner pieces are plated diagonally and require a minimum bed size of 242mm X 242mm. If you did want to scale these pieces up or down, be sure to apply whatever scaling changes you make to all four pieces and joiners as well, and ONLY scale up or down on the X and Y axes. While scaling the joiners, they must first be rotated by 45 degrees for even scaling, and can then be rotated back in your slicer prior to printing.
I printed the egg pieces in PETG, because that's what I have loaded on most of my machines, but it should print well in any rigid material that doesn't shrink too badly. I then placed the four pieces of the egg on a large piece of cardboard, slapped a bead of superglue on the recessed edges which form a cross when the pieces are in place. Then I placed the long joining piece in the groove running left to right, and pressed each of the two shorter joining pieces top to bottom, one above the horizontal joiner and one below the horizontal joiner. The cardboard was simply to avoid making a mess of our dining room table while gluing it all together. Hopefully the photo of the template will make the orientation of the pieces clear.
