Magnetic Third Hand Storage

DESCRIPTION

I have several magnetic clamps that I use whilst soldering or the like. The clamps work best when sat on a steel base, but would all get lost in the clutter. I designed the following storage box to keep my clamps neatly together and integrated a steel plate into the storage box lid. The box supports three different clamp types, holding a total of 9 clamps. Now it’s easy to set my clamps up.

ASSEMBLY

The box lid rests on top of the box with a light friction fit. I have made available two forms of the box lid, but you only need to choose one. The simple lid covers the box. The more sophisticated lid has integrated a steel plate and acts as a working base for the magnetic clamps.

My steel plate comes from an old print plate, cut to size (130 x 100mm). Cutting a steel plate is a more demanding task and I only recommend doing it if you already have the right tools and skills for the job (eg. bandsaw, angle grinder).

I used CA (super glue) glue to hold the steel plate in-place to the lid.

Optional Screws

I’ve included a means to keep the long flexible clamps in-place in the box. For each long clamp slot, there’s an adjacent vertical hole. I placed a steel 3mm self-tapping screw into the whole for the clamp to attach to.

Note: The self-tapping screw must be steel. For instance, stainless steel or brass screws won’t work with the clamp magnetics.

PRINTING INFORMATION

My print is made in 1.75mm eSUN PLA+ White, with 0.2mm layer height on a Bambu Lab H2 series printer.

Both the print profiles and the individual STL files are included for download.  The included 3MF files can be used with the Bambu Labs Slicer, BambuStudio.
