Kinetic Planetary Gear Coaster

Inspired by a planetary style gear box, this large 105mm coaster features an industrial aesthetic focused on spur gears.
 

This large design can accommodate any normal or oversized drinking glasses. The embedded spur gear pattern below contains condensation rolling off the glass to prevent rings on table surfaces.

A snap-fit design, the center sun gear idles in the center of the planet carrier. Meanwhile, hold the carrier base in one hand and the external ring gear in the other to make the coaster move.

Printing Notes

As a snap-fit design, if misaligned there is a chance of a piece breaking. While the stems have been reinforced to prevent this, printing a spare planet gear or two might come in handy.

All spur gears feature an anti-elephant foot chamber on the top and bottom sides and no supports required. It is recommended to print on the slower side if you experience difficulties with the gear teeth profiles.
 

***If you have issues with free-spin or limited travel this is typically due to the ring gear as any amount of elephant footing will inhibit travel. Remove the ring gear and clean with p400 sandpaper or your clippers to improve performance.
