Description
Thelmo wanted a Chaplin, he was our project manager, we helped a little with the arms and the cane, the rest was all his work. #OttoRemixChallenge
OTTO is for Thelmo, and for a lot of kids I've introduced OTTO to, much more than a robot. It's a character. He's funny, lovable, poetical, an accomplished dancer and has an incredible balance. It's a character they can indefinitly model and remix. The great Charles Chaplin was all of that and much more. And Thelmo adores him. So having an OTTO Chaplin now makes perfect sense. Thelmo could have found with many other inspirations for his OTTO Remix... But as challenging as it was, I think he couldn't have came up with a better idea and I'm really happy he took us thru that road ! And I'm proud of the work done at the OTTO MakerCamp (thanks Nicolas!) and bravo Thelmo!
Thelmo wanted an OTTO CHAPLIN with arms but a square OTTO, like the regular one he loves so much. So, in order to remix the V09 version of OTTO, we were inspired by the community work: a bit o Ottoween (hands), a bit of MyGoBroRobo (arms), a bit of Wedded OTTO (hat), a bit of Trish' Minion with arms (arm attachment).
So this piece is a real Remix, dedicated to the OTTO community, without whom this wouldn't have been possible. Thank you all from Thelmo and I, Catherine (Club Leader and Mum), from the bottom of our heart !!
Thelmo had a very precise idea from the start. He draw us a draft on the whiteboard, and it already looked like the finished one:
Then we went through all the remixes of OTTO and tried to find both inspiration and stl files to inspired ourselves form. Thelmo decomposed the character design an decided which part would be taken from the original OTTO V09, whixh from the others and which would be his own creation.
He started with the Hat (inspired from Groom Otto):
Then the Overall back...
and front...
Ready to export in layers:
The shoe:
So this project was a great opportunity to learn designing in Tinkercad, basically combining forms to already imported STL of remixes...
We had to use both the Anycubic Delta and the CCR10 to meet our goal, which was to finish before the end of the 5 days Camp.
The Cane
Body remixed (a cubic V09 with arms attachment). We can see I had accidentally mirrored the file... Be careful : don't forget the supports !
We had to reprint the shirt (the back was too thin), and we increased (in Cura settings) the bottom layer to 2.4mm. Then the vest, the tie and the tux were painted with acrylic :
and glued together
Layer after layers, following the etching...
then the edges were blackened with permanent marker
And to achieve the preparation of the elements before mounting, Thelmo soldered the wire to the switch. That's the part he loved the most, soldering (like lost of the kids actually)!
And repeat for the back part of the jacket. Thelmo noticed Charlie Chaplin had different types of clothes depending on the adventure that he was filmed in. So, coming up with the polka dot velcro system, he will be able to design other costumes in the future and dress his Otto accordingly.
We invested lots of time and resources to provide open source code, software and hardware, please support this project by just giving us a ❤ Like and share and you are welcome to be a part of this friendly community of robot builders, teachers and makers. Join today our Otto Builder community
