Description

Inspired by the recent push by Prusa research to design and manufacture useful items in the fight against coronavirus, I thought I would share some items I designed and use regularly for research in my lab.

While the current diagnostic test for coronavirus is PCR based, I thought that some researchers may require this incubation chamber for histology or staining other samples mounted on glass slides.

This chamber is used to perform immunohistochemistry. It holds 2 glass slides horizontally so that antibodies or other solutions can incubate on the tissue. This provides a means to stain for an endless number of markers and is an essential piece of equipment that I use every day in the lab.

I designed this since many of the incubation chambers I have found online were inadequate or not durable enough for regular lab use. Additionally, this was designed so that it fits on the prusa mini print bed.

I strongly recommend printing in PETG since this can be wiped down and cleaned with lab cleaning reagents such as 70% ethanol.

Assembly:

The hinge for the lid and the bottom can be secured by simply inserting a 1.75 mm filament through the entire length of the hinge. It can be held in place by simply melting the ends of the filament.

Please check out my other designs including:

  • A larger 8 slide case: https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/26481-immunohistochemistry-staining-chamber-8-slide-hold

  • A slide holder for once your slides have been mounted with coverslips:

Disclaimer: I am a neurobiologist and do not study coronavirus. While I hope that this case may be useful for other researchers, I am happy to take suggestions on future modifications and improvements. Please comment below or send me a private message and I will do my best, especially if you are currently working on coronavirus related research.
