Description

Show off your 3D printing prowess with a tray modeled after a spool of filament! Two sizes are included: a 150mm diameter version and a 100mm version.

The tray is divided into 3 parts: a Top, a Bottom, and the imitation Filament. All part files are in the recommended print orientation. The tolerances between the parts is 0.05mm: if you're having trouble inserting the Top or Bottom into the Filament part, you should only need to scale up the Filament part.

You can customize the size by scaling the parts in the X and Y dimensions (be sure to scale both dimensions equally). If scaling down, use the 100mm diameter version; if scaling up, use the 150mm diameter version. The center area is 20mm smaller than the diameter, so use that to calculate your required scale factor.

For example: scaling all three of the 100mm parts to ~85% makes an awesome drink coaster!

  • The center area of the 100mm version is 80mm.
  • A beer can's diameter is 66mm, but add 2mm for some tolerance.
  • 68mm / 80mm = 85%
  • The tolerance between the Filament part and the Top/Bottom parts will shrink, so the Filament part should be scaled less by about a percentage point (86%).

When printing, default settings are fine. I used 2 vertical walls, 4 top/bottom layers, and a 10% infill. The top pattern on the Bottom was set to concentric for that smooth look.

For assembly, snap the Top and Bottom into the Filament part. I recommend inserting the Bottom part first. Be sure to watch the orientation of the Filament part: the top side isn't smooth. Glue isn't necessary as the snap edges and friction will hold the tray together.

Show off your filament! Be sure to share a make if you print one!
