I sourced the string of 50 12mm WS2811 Neopixels from Aliexpress, here's one option: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000081728430.html. I won't go into getting them running, all the info is well laid out at https://kno.wled.ge . In a nutshell, you load the firmware onto the ESP, plug the lights into the ESP, load the app onto your phone, and bingo.

I've included the OpenSCAD files here for people to customise the size of the dome, holes, and base. The base was a quick afterthought so could do with more work.

You can probably get away without supports for the centre top of the dome but I found it useful to use supports just the top third

Start with the far end LED on the string pushed into the topmost hole, and work backwards in a spiral from there. Pack the wires carefully as there's not a lot of room in the uploaded model.

I used Wolfram Mathematica & family brains to generate the hole positions to get them equidistant across the hemisphere, then saved the positions in an array in the scad file.
