Description

We have utilized a number of magnetic child locks on cabinets and drawers in our house but kept misplacing or breaking the keys used to open them.  For reference, this is the style of lock that I am referring to Safety Locks, Magnetic Safety Locks, Invisible Safety Latch Lock for Cupboard, Cabinet and drawer, Child Proof, Easy to Install Kit, With Extra 3M Adhesive Tapes,10 Locks 2 Keys : Amazon.ca: Baby.

I designed this to be a single piece and to embed a magnet.  That way we could have them everywhere so we weren't searching when trying to open a cabinet and they would be strong in case they are dropped (the one pictured has been dropped a few times, damaged but not broken).  It is designed to work with 32mm (diameter) X 3mm (thick) circular neodymium magnets (like these DIYMAG Powerful Neodymium Disc Magnets, Strong, Permanent, Rare Earth Magnets. Fridge, DIY, Building, Scientific, Craft, and Office Magnets, 1.26 inch x 1/8 inch, Pack of 8 : Amazon.ca: Industrial & Scientific).  These are typically stronger/larger magnets so you don't need to be as precise with placement as the keys that come with the locks.

I've included a gcode file that should already have the pause print command at the appropriate layer so that it will stop for you to embed the magnet.

Print Settings/Instructions:

IMPORTANT NOTE 1 - Print with the small diameter end on the print bed.  This is counterintuitive to normal printing orientation but there is one major advantage…you can install the magnet and it will stay in the slot without needing glue to hold it in (due to the attraction to the print bed.

IMPORTANT NOTE 2 - Ensure that you check the magnet polarity with your child locks before installing them in the printed parts.  Ensure that the appropriate side is facing the bottom of the print so that it will work with your locks!  Ask me how I know…

Layer height is up to your preference.  I've printed at 0.2mm, 0.3mm and 0.35mm without issue.

4 perimeters, 4 solid top and bottom layers.  This is probably overkill but I wanted it to be strong in case it was dropped.  The one pictured has been dropped a few times.

PLA or PETG works (PLA has been strong enough so far)

70% cubic infill (probably overkill)
