Description

I found myself working on another project that needed a hand crank for a 35mm film canister and started working on one. This is a variation of that, which works really well as a stand-alone simple machine for winding up those 35mm films. There are a variety of applications/uses for this as a sand-alone piece, which is why I'm offering it to the world.

To see actual prints of my design, check out the “Makes” tab (I print basically everything I design.)

Print instructions

Printer: MakerFarm Pegasus 10"

Rafts: Doesn't Matter

Supports: No

Resolution: 0.2mm

Infill: 20%

Filament: GST3D PLA+ Black & Red (Any)

Nozzle temp: 215°C

Bed temp: 70°C

Notes:
Brim:
I used a brim so that the knob part was sure to stay in place while printing. I basically always use a brim for everything though, so as to increase general adhesion and also to inhibit edge warping/curling.

Post-Printing
Nothing special for post-printing. Just basic brim clean-up and then click the knob into the crank.

REMIX/MASH-UP/MOD INFO
This film crank/winder is a remix/mash-up/mod of a couple of other good things I found on thingiverse, but neither of which really met me need. The following two links are to those two inspirational things.

"Crank of winder for 35mm films" by Skibek
"35mm Film on 120 Spool" by coconnor55

I took the two models above and mashed 'em together and added a few improvements/tweaks, to better suit the new, remixed, design.

IMPROVEMENTS/TWEAKS I'VE MADE

  1. FIVE different crank variations ("bottom-crank", "tall-bottom-crank", "top-crank", "tall-top-crank", and "uni-crank"), so that the crank can be attached onto either side of the 35mm film canister. Two of the five variations have taller winder heads, and the "uni-crank" is an attempt to merge the "top" and "bottom" cranks into a single unit
  2. The crank arm is wider, so as to more aptly join to the winder head, since the original was too thin for my use and for my aesthetics
  3. I removed the 120 spool holder holes from the winder head(s) as they serve no purpose for this model, and also to make it a little nicer looking
  4. "Tall" variants (3mm taller) of both winder heads, so that there is a little more clearance for the crank shaft
  5. A "uni(versal)" variant, that tries to be both the "top" and "bottom" variants rolled into a single crank, so that you only need to print one and have full functionality. It has a longer center (forked) connector so that it can accommodate both ends of the film canister, and also has the taller winder head. It works, but there might be room for improvement because on the canisters I tested it on, is was a little looser on the bottom side than I would prefer
  6. I was having trouble with the original knob not quite being sturdy enough, so I made some mods to it too. The shaft and locking nipple are both a bit wider, and I split them both into quarters (instead of just halves) so that the shaft opening could accommodate the wider locking nipple head and spread more evenly. These all with the goal of making it more sturdy and resilient. I think it worked
