Clamp on Windshield Phone Holder for MGB or MG Midget

NOTE: PRINT THE GoPro VERSION. It's just better.

I needed a special mount to secure my phone in my classic MGB. I took one of the gravity phone holders and remixed the mounting solution to clamp to the center post of the MG's windshield. I used the Prusa organic supports to print the original arm at the required 45 degree angle. I couldn't get the threaded nut to grip the ball and socket tight enough, so I ended up super gluing the phone holder at the correct angle. I probably could have messed with shimming it, but I didn't need it to be adjustable. (The update below fixes this issue)

Printing:

PETG or ASA is preferred as it will be in the sun, and can get hot.

I used 4 walls and 10% cubic infill and that worked just fine.

Supports required for the “sled” and the “body”, but use a support blocker for the threads.

The GoPro version of the arm does not need supports, the original does.

Needed for assembly:

• 1 thin rubber band to use for the sled return.

• 2x M4x12 screws and M4 nuts

• 2x M5x20 screws and M5 nuts for the GoPro version below

• 2x M3x8 and M3 heatset inserts for Midget version

Assembly instructions:

1. Insert the sled into the body, and attach your chosen arms.

   1. They mount to the sled and go over the small posts next to it.

2. Use the small rubber band to slide into the groove in the sled and attach to the remaining two posts on the body.

   1. Test here to make sure that the rubber band isn't too strong and your phone weight can hold it in place. If the rubber band is too strong, your phone won't slide the whole way down.

3. Once the rubber band is confirmed to be the right tension, you can clip the Front Plate in place.

4. Screw your chosen mount (GoPro or knob) into the back of the body assembly.

5. Using the two M4 screws and the “MG Phone Mount Back”, attach your chosen 45° arm to the post in the windshield.

6. If you are using the original files, slide the threaded nut over the mount knob. (make sure the open threads are facing the back.

7. Then pop the Mount knob ball into the socket on the arm and secure with the threaded nut.

8. If you are using the GoPro version (and really, you should be) assemble the arm with the two M5 screws and nuts.

9. Adjust the mount to the right angle for you, and tighten it down.

Update 10/22/2024: I uploaded a version of the arm that uses a GoPro style mount. I found this to be more secure and less likely to sag than the original. This version uses 2 M5x20 screws and 2 M5 nuts, or you should be able to use GoPro hardware if you have it.

Another bonus of this version is that there are now no supports required for the main arm since it prints perfectly at a 45° angle.

Update 4/9/2026: Added an arm at the angle to match the rake of the Midget windshield because it is slightly more upright. This version uses two M3x8 screws and heat set inserts instead of the M4 hardware.

I also added a round mid arm to better match the aesthetic of the main arm than the old square one.
