Description
The current contest is called "Organization Tools" While this is meant as parts for storing stuff, I would like to submit a "Tool used in my organization".
Boeing aircraft with Sky Interior (BSI) have a new layout for passenger oxygen masks. In order to test the automatic opening of the door at each triple seat without having the masks fall down a special key can be inserted into a slot in the door. When a solenoid is activated, the door falls, but is blocked by the key and opens only slightly. This gives the aircraft engineer visual confirmation that the system works as intended and resetting to operational configuration is limited to closing the door into the latch and removing the test key.
While the key is cheap to buy, you need as many of them as the aircraft has passenger oxygen doors in order to test the entire system. Waiting for a fresh order could delay maintenance if it needs to be shipped from US to EU, printing a replacement saves the day (or job at least)
