Description

This is my entry for the GRABCAD & Makerbot "MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer Challenge". The challenge asked to create a futuristic vehicle that would exist in the year 2040.

After modeling it I thought I'd turn it into a playset for Thingiverse! I've uploaded 2 scales for the playset. One prints on a single Replicator 2 build platform including one length of track. The other spans three Replicator 2 build platforms and should be pretty huge!

Below is my original description from the GRABCAB challenge.

This is my vision for a vehicle from the year 2040. Based on the PeopleMover prototype from the 1964 World's Fair this vehicle uses magnetic levitation for acceleration and deceleration. Providing an electric powered quiet and safe mode of public transportation which will surely be even more important in the year 2040.

Passengers can board from the station facing side of each car and enjoy their travels from their open air cabin. Silently zipping along the magnetized tracks the cars can break away individually as needed to provide a more direct path of travel for the passengers.

This model has been optimized for 3D printing on the Makerbot Replicator 2. All parts that require assembly fit into one another via rods and sockets. A few dabs of superglue and you'll be ready to go!

Instructions

  1. Print singe build platform or dual build platform sized model.
  2. Glue parts into place.
  3. Print maglev tracks (note: may not actually levitate).
  4. Explore a great big beautiful tomorrow!
