RotoMagno Containers

Howdy, wonderful people!

I really liked the Dial Box from a little while ago, with its twist-lock magnetic closure, but I really wanted to see if the idea could be scaled down to a much smaller size for holding much smaller things.  And somehow I made a much larger one, too!

There are three containers here:

* A large, rounded-cornered square box

* A small, rounded-cornered square box (that really has a circular inner)

* A small teardrop-shaped container.

The two smaller containers are, once again, quite fidget-friendly!  I swear these weren't made as fidget toys intentionally!  That said, the world always needs more fidget things :)  

That large box, though, was an interesting thing to work through.  The lid needed to rotate around the centre of the box far enough to disengage the magnets, which also meant there needed to be empty space between the lid and the box for that movement to occur.  Keeping the top of the box as unencumbered as possible by the mechanisms in play was a priority, so all that movement allowance is built into the lid design, which is why the interior of the lid has such a weird shape!

Optional Magnets

As usual, we're using our old friend, 6x3mm magnets!  They really are optional, though, since the containers close quite nicely without any magnets at all.  However, they're far more useful with magnets, and far more satisfying to use.

The two square boxes will take up to four sets of magnets (so, eight magnets in total), but will be fine with just two sets on opposing corners.  Of course, that will mean that you'll need to check the magnet positions on the lid each time to make sure the lid is oriented properly.

The little teardrop-shaped box has just two magnets. 

Print Description

This is a regular-mode print, but you'll want to make sure things are nice and neat so that parts can move freely against each other.  The tolerances are reasonable but not as generous as usual, just to keep things nice and secure.  

Note that the colour scheme in some of the photos is simply a plain old filament change from black in the first few layers to a gradient filament for the rest :)

Print Dimensions

The large RotoMagno box occupies 116mm x 116mm on the print bed and is 74mm tall.

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

The main problem here is the magnet holes!  Scaling these will also scale the magnet holes, which isn't ideal.

Print Orientation

The container bodies print right-way-up, and the lids print upside-down.

Further Thoughts

Oh, I almost forgot - there are two sizes of the large box!  The small box (and lid) is half the height of the large box (and lid), with allowance for the inevitable slight gaps between lid and box and between the boxes themselves.
