Description

Hi hi, wonderful people!

Remember those Fragment Coasters from a little while back? They were fun, but just lacking a little...resolution. Which is why there's now this dotty pixel version that has far more segments than those other designs!

There was a version of this that used a grid of squares (because we already had hexagons, even if they were a little larger) but the upper frame is only thin, and the spindly borders between the tiny squares did not have a lot of rigidity. The extra material in the void between the circles makes a distinct difference to the flexing of that upper plate that keeps things in place. That said, it's unavoidable to have movement in those little pixel pieces towards the middle of the plate. I'm shaking a coaster now and trying to do an impression of maracas with it. Okay, it's not exactly loud. A water-based glue would solve the problem, of course, should it be an annoyance.

In terms of assembly, there's an optional frame provided that's there to keep the edge squares aligned, which really does make everything else easier. Flip the front plate over, add the frame and the outermost point squares, fill in the rest, then thread the base on top of it all!

Print Description

All the parts of this model print individually and are later assembled, so you'll want to make sure things are nice and neat.

Print Dimensions

The coaster base occupies 94mm x 94mm on the print bed and is 6mm tall.

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

Hmm, you could probably scale this one up or down a little, but you might want to scale the pixel dots themselves differently to the main plate so that the fit is still as it should be.

Print Orientation

As with the Fragment Coasters in general, all the parts print right-way-up.

Further Thoughts

One of these days I'll make some mechanical coasters!

Happy printing!

xoxo

Sven.
