Description

An Iconic Design Object

This model is a little different from what we usually do in MiniWorld3D. Instead of a landmark or famous building, this is part of a series of objects representing art & design of the world. Together, they decorate a themed room in a miniature mansion!

Besides traditional objects from cultures around the world, the doll house room also has top designer furniture!

Other objects in this series include:

  • Amazigh Rug - North Africa
  • Boomerang - Australia
  • Dala Horse - Sweden, Europe
  • Totonaca Mask - Mexico, Americas

You can find the full project here, the modular rooms mansion is designed by @skip_per07, main 3D prints and photography by @maisonlumiere_3d using Polymaker3D filaments, and this specific object and everything in the MiniWorld3D travel-themed room was designed by Dany Sánchez. Other renowned designers have decorated other themed rooms!

About Ettore Sottsass and the Carlton Room Divider

The totemic Carlton room divider is an icon of the Memphis Milano design movement from the 1980's. The piece questions conventional furniture by combining a space divider, bookcase, and chest of drawers. Intended for the higher end of the market and finely handcrafted, it is made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and cheap plastic laminate, a subversion of high and low. The vivid colors and seemingly random interplay of solids and voids suggest avant-garde painting and sculpture. While at first sight the slanted shelving seems counterintuitive, it accommodates books which often fall over in upright shelving.

The shape is open to interpretation: it may be read variously as a robot greeting the user with open arms, a many-armed Hindu goddess, or even a triumphant man atop a constructed chaos of his own making

Designer: Ettore Sottsass (Italian (born Austria), Innsbruck 1917–2007 Milan)

Manufacturer: Memphis Milano

Date: 1981

Medium: Wood, plastic laminate

Printing Tips

Suggested parameters:

No supports.

Fine-tune retraction to avoid stringing.
Perimeters: 2
Top layers: 3
Infill: as low as 15%

Input shaper ok

Print with the flat side laying on the bed, so the shelf should be lying back. MMU/AMS is needed for a fully colorful print. We hope to provide a split in parts assembly version later.

There are several options for colors online, but you can get creative and have your own color choices.

Scale in Z to increase or decrease the shelf's thickness to your liking.
