Description

I have put together a couple of 3MF files that have a few helping hands on printing this nice figure that I've remixed from MatheusEvan.

My model sits at about 17cm.

I found the original model was quite big, it had a very large base that I found a bit wasteful, and was excessively difficult to print without a lot of face blemishes, so I've gone ahead and made the following changes:

  • Scaled parts 70% of the original
  • Added dowel holes the size of 1.75mm filament for all parts except the sword
  • Cut the model in appropriate places fore easier printing and overhangs
  • Removed a large portion of the base
  • Removed the other character 9S

Things to note:

  • There are two 3mf files, one is primarily for the base, and one is for the main body parts
    • “Nier Base.3mf” is intended to be used with a 0.4mm nozzle at 0.15mm layer height
    • "Nier body.3mf" is intended to be used with a 0.25mm nozzle at 0.05mm layer height
  • On the body 3mf, I have kept optional face and body parts, note there is a body with and without a skirt, and a face with and without a mask
  • You will need to tune your support contact Z distances otherwise you'll have a hard time removing the supports - in general I advise you to be confident in your support settings, this model scale will be quite testing on most printers
  • not all dowel hole depths are the same, push a bit of filament in to gauge depth then snip off about the same depth for the other parts dowel hole
  • most of the dowel holes allow easy merging of the cut parts however you will want to look into your elephant foot compensation if needed, I used super glue on and around the dowel holes. Most cut models utilise more than one dowel so orientation is locked, however I could not fit a dowel hole of 1.75mm diameter on the sword, but it's a small part and is easily glue together
  • I used snug supports on most of my parts, however you can use organic supports if you want, you may want to remove the top interface layers, and you will need to tune the branch diameter, and tip diameter. I found when left on default, some organic support bases started printing in thin air causing to issues, and generally found for most of the big parts that snug supports were quicker, and you only spent a matter of pennies / cents more on used filament. I did use organic supports on a few parts like the sword though
  • I have hand drawn supports so if you choose to use them, then keep ‘for support enforcers only’ turned on. I found ‘everywhere’ was excessive and tends to add supports into small parts that are very difficult to remove.
  • On both 3MF files, I have kept the original stl parts untouched, and unscaled, to the side of the plate and in an ‘unprinted’ state, you can play with them as you see fit by right clicking and clicking ‘printable’
  • I literally painted on UV cured resin, and did a second coat on parts I wanted super smooth like her skin, and leather boots, but left one coat on the fabric to keep the texture there. You can also spray on polyurethane like plastikote, or paint on epoxy. Just make sure to keep the connecting dowel joints free otherwise the fit won't be so nice
  • If you want to play with the stl's then you can right click on the part and export the stl
  • There are a few uploaded makes on the attached thingiverse page
  • You can likely print all of this with a 0.4mm nozzle, however the detail on the parts won't be as good because the line widths are a bit thicker, if you don't have a 0.25mm nozzle then a 0.4mm nozzle won't look bad, it's just the smaller nozzle looks better. Make sure you change the printer in the 3mf if you don't want a 0.25mm nozzle
  • Review the filament and printer sections of the 3mf's, as always, to make sure they suit your setup

The pictures uploaded don't include the sword because I was stupid and accidentally painted and polished the 100% scale sword instead of the 70% sword which is printing right now, I will upload a finished photo when it's done :-)

You are very welcome to play with the parts, let me know if you have any suggestions and be sure to upload your make. Thanks !
