Description

This is a container for silica gel:

  • It has quite a lot of holes and in total a quite high hole area ratio, so great air flow.
  • It is printed in vase mode, which makes it quite fast to print (especially without retractions)
  • and it uses not much filament.
  • The double wall structure makes it quite sturdy though.
  • It comes with an OpenSCAD file, so you can easily customize it to your needs:
    • diameter
    • height
    • mesh size
    • extrusion width (use at least 0.6mm, more for bigger sizes)
    • optional slits on bottom and top
    • tolerance (for the screw-on lid)
  • it also comes with a screw-on funnel for easy filling

Customizing:

  • Download, install and run OpenSCAD, it's completely free (open source; Win/Linux/Mac),
  • load the scad file,
  • customize in the customizer panel on the right,
  • press F6 to render and F7 to export STL.
  • I wish Printables had an OpenSCAD customizer like some other sites…

Printing:

  • use vase mode
  • set external perimeter extrusion width (advanced settings) to the extrusion value set in the model, 0.8mm by default. This can be done with a nozzle of 0.4mm (or 0.6mm or 0.8mm)
  • set bottom layers to 4 or 5, except
  • for the funnel use 0 bottom layers
  • for some speed use filament settings→cooling→slow down if layer time is below: 4s
  • I use 0.2mm layer height, but other values should be fine
  • split into objects (the [o] button at the top of the slicer window) and delete what you don't want to print

If you want to print body and lid at the same time:

  • split to objects (see above)
  • output options: complete individual objects (print order by object)
  • place the parts far apart, one front and one back
  • (it is even possible to print more parts in one go, but that requires more careful placement, taking care of part printing order (front to back) and knowledge of your printer head dimensions)
