Description
I recently upgraded my Tronxy XY-2 Pro with the Comgrow Ender 3 Direct Drive Extruder Kit.
This kit is currently selling for $50 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CRKS7XK9/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=A2ALB3RMNIRLH8&psc=1
This kit is, IMO, a phenomenal value, especially as an upgrade for the machine it's intended for, the Creality Ender 3.
The kit comes with a complete Sovol SV06 extruder, a 32 bit silent replacement mainboard, the required cabling, and tools necessary for the installation.
As awesome a value as this kit is, it's not 100% perfect.
If you use the included “Comgrow” labeled strain relief clamp to hold the ribbon cable in place at the tool head, the cable will slam into the left pillar of the gantry every time the machine homes the X axis, or even when it's just printing @ the far left side of the heated bed.
This part is a quick and easy solution to that interference.
The two screws that hold the factory strain relief clamp in place are too short for installing this model. I designed it with M3 X 12mm socket head screws in mind, but longer screws may be substituted so long as they're not so long as to cause interference themselves.
This model prints as oriented in the STL without any need of supports.
The only other problem to note with this kit, and it's kinda major, depending on your perspective, is that this tool head places the nozzle roughly 20mm forward on the Y axis of the stock heads nozzle position. I was able to reclaim ½ of the lost build volume on the Y axis with my Marlin build by setting “Y_MIN_POS” to “-10”, but anything lower than “-10” causes my bed to slam into my Y axis belt tensioner. The real fix for that would be to drill 2 more holes in each of 40x40 extrusions that run forward and back, so that the gantry mounts 20mm further back from its stock position. I'll eventually get around to doing that, but this printer runs so AWESOMELY with that extruder, I've got it running pretty much around the clock.
UPDATE 07152024: I did end up making a drill template so I could move my gantry 20mm back to regain my lost build volume. That model is available at: https://www.printables.com/model/944011-drill-template-for-comgrow-e3-direct-drive-extrude
Neither Comgrow, nor Sovol, who recently acquired Comgrow are advertising this kit. I stumbled upon it accidentally while looking for something else on Amazon. I've not seen a single video on YouTube and nobody appears to be talking about it. I don't know if this product is on its way out, which would certainly be a real shame, given how AWESOME and inexpensive this thing is.
If you like Sovol's planetary gear direct drive extruder with a 7.5 to 1 gear ratio, and own an Ender 3 with a bowden setup, this kit is the way to go… No, I don't work for Sovol, nor Comgrow, this is just my opinion. :)
