Howdy, wonderful people!

You might recall a while back we had a bracelet model that printed in vase mode without any bottom layers at all. Now, that model proceeded to zigzag through three-dimensional space to give the model a bit of rigidity, but what if we did the opposite, and designed for wibbly-wobbly flexibility, and the ability to turn entirely inside-out? And could we use such things to adorn a more conventional vase model?

Early versions of this model had the ruffles twist a full 90 degrees so that when wrapped around the vase they were fairly flat, but it turned out to be far more interesting to twist through 45 degrees and project the big curvy bits outwards in a ruffly kind of way.

So, from there it was a matter working out how to actually make those ruffles stay in place against the vase main body, and as you can see we have pockets! Now, pockets aren't strictly printable in vase mode, but these are interrupted with a central slice and a series of carefully angled planes that keep things all nice and vase-appropriate. So, the shorter curves on the ruffles can push into the pockets and be held nicely in place.

There are a couple of different sized ruffles included, but the photos here show only the two smallest diameters, mostly since I decided they worked best :)

 

Print Description

These are all vase mode prints, so you'll need to set your slicer accordingly!

  • The main vase body prints in normal vase mode, with the usual base layer
  • The ruffles print in vase mode with zero bottom layers!

Print Dimensions

The main vase body occupies 66mm x 66mm on the print bed, and is 129mm tall.

Supports Needed? 

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

This should certainly scale up or down, though you might have to tweak the relative scaling of the ruffles to make sure they fit nicely.

Print Orientation 

The main vase prints right-way-up, as vase prints generally do. The ruffles print flat (and with no bottom layers!)

Further Thoughts

I do believe I already have an Inversion Vase, but I couldn't not use that term for this one! This one at least has ruffle  in the name, too! Hopefully the original vase won't mind sharing :)
