Create long-lasting flames with this waterproof firestarter! Flames last 10+ minutes, even in the rain!
No plastic is burned for this model - instead, the mold is used to create a waterproof wax and dryer-lint (or sawdust, paper, etc) cube, which when lit generates a powerful flame, perfect for any camping trip or bonfire.
The firestarter cube is completely waterproof, it can be soaked in a lake for hours and still burn with no issues.
Included are the files for a container and screw-top lid. The container can hold up to 8 of the firestarter cubes as well as around 2 packs worth of matches.
Printing Instructions:
Any type of filament can be used. No plastic will be burned.
Print:
- 1X Firestarter_Mold.stl
- 1X Firestarter_Mold_Plunger.stl
- 1X Container_Body.stl
- 1X Container_Lid.stl
All STLs are already oriented in the optimal printing position.
My tests worked very well with 0.2mm layer height and 15% infill, though other layer heights and infill would likely work fine.
Instructions - Assembly and Use:
- Insert the handle of the plunger through the hole in the mold cube, so the square part of the plunger is inside the cube part of the mold. (see photos)
- (Optional) For easier removal from the mold, you can apply an oil to the inside of the cube mold, or cling wrap can be placed in the mold before filling. I was still able to pop out the cube without it, but the first cube took some arm strength to remove.
- Lightly pack the cube with dryer lint (or sawdust, paper, etc). Do not over-stuff.
- Light a candle and drip wax onto the lint. You will see the lint absorb the wax. Keep dripping until the mold is almost overflowing.
- Let the wax harden. You can place it in the freezer to speed it up (only takes 5 minutes in the freezer).
- When hardened, place the plunger handle against a hard surface and push down against the two mold handles to pop the wax cube out from the mold. (Will take lots of force the first time, but future uses get easier).
- Place up to 8 cubes in the container, and fill the outside pockets of the container with matches or any other firestarter implements. Screw the lid on for transport and to keep water out.
- To use, hold a flame to the wax cube until it lights, and use to start your fire!
