A proof of concept for an impact detector.

Inspired by the Shock Watch, except using a different mechanic to avoid patent infringement.

Proof of concept, not intended for real-world application.

Not rated for any specific g-force thresholds, especially because quality control would be impossible between different printers, filaments, and slicer settings.

Printing

  • The flexure and mass part and hook frame should be PLA.
  • The flexure and mass part should be 100% infill to make it weight more.

For the flexure, it should be one width layer of thickness. Ensure the flexures connect to the mass (some slicer settings may disconnect them).

The other parts aren't too important regarding what material is used.

Printed with:

  • PLA for flexure parts
  • 100% infill for flexure and mass
  • Prusa Slicer
    • Archane perimeter generator
  • 0.4mm nozzle
  • 0.2mm layer height

Assembly

See the video for demonstration and assembly.

  • Make the mass red while keeping the ribbon flexure the same color as the backplate. Use a multifilament printer or marker.
  • Fit the hook frame into the backplate.
  • Place the ribbon flexure inside the hook frame so each hook separates the ribbon flexure from the mass.
  • Place the lid.
