Description
Recently, I needed a tool for serial installation of heat-set inserts with precise positioning. I decided to create a compact press station specifically for this task. At first, I looked into existing solutions—thought I’d find a suitable one and just print it. But what I saw really surprised me: most of these constructions are overly bulky. They take up half a desk, made from aluminum profiles, and have unjustifiably large dimensions. Yet in practice, if you need to install inserts into a tall enclosure, you can simply raise the press by placing something underneath. The construction doesn’t need to be oversized by default.
I wasn’t satisfied with the search results, so I quickly developed my own version. At its core is an MGN7 rail: miniature but very precise. I printed the base and legs from PLA with carbon fiber (PLA-CF), and initially made the lever from carbon-filled polyamide. Later, I replaced it with a version printed in resin on a UV printer—this material handles prolonged heat exposure much better. Hot air from the soldering iron rises and gradually heats the holder. For continuous operation of 10–15 minutes, this becomes critical.
The tool easily adapts to different types of soldering irons. The kit includes holders for the compact T210 handle with a modified insert installation tip and for the Hakko T12 tip handle. Mounting diameters are 9 and 13 mm. A STEP file is also included, in case you need to adjust it for your own tool.
Instead of a traditional spring, I used a latex cord. It provides a smoother and more consistent lever return. The only challenge is securing it. I stretched the cord tightly and clamped it in a heat-shrink tube while heating it in a stretched state. It holds reliably and works effectively.
The station is secured with strong magnets to a metal plate—on the one where I usually work with circuit boards. It’s very convenient: the design is stable, the legs don’t get in the way, and the height is easy to adjust. I’ve shown all key assembly steps in the video. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments and I’ll clarify when possible.
